How to Easily Cook Brown Rice

January 23rd, 2012

I have several New Year resolutions and one of them is to try to eat healthier. One of the hardest things has been to switch from white bread and white rice to wheat bread and brown rice. I am finally starting to enjoy the taste of both wheat toast and brown rice, but learning how to cook brown rice has been more of a challenge.

It turns out that the easiest way to cook brown rice is simply add an extra 1/2 cup of water to the pan and cook for an additional 5-8 minutes.

Brown rice is also a good substitute in one of my favorite dishes, this dirty rice recipe, too. Over the years, I have slowly been making this recipe healthier, a little at a time. Dirty rice is prepared with vegetables and chicken livers, which give it its brown color and hence the name “dirty.”

Luckily, brown rice maintains the brown color of the dish while allowing me to phase out the less-than-optimal chicken livers.

Cake Recipes from Scratch

January 5th, 2012

Anyone can go to the supermarket get a cake mix and get an end product that is decent, but nothing can replace a cake that has been made from scratch. Cake recipes from scratch will seem a bit challenging but they will be the ones that will impress your friends and family the most, plus they will give you bragging rights; after all not everyone will dare to step into the territory.

The best thing about cake recipes from scratch is that they let you add your own personal touch to the recipe. You do not have to stick to the old 8×11 pan that a cake mix will need you to use. Instead you can calculate the amount of ingredients you need in order to get a different size cake. You can also think toppings and change some ingredients to make your cake healthier. It may be a bit challenging when you look at the recipe, but it is easier than it looks.

But that all changed this time when I got a hold of this healthy banana bread recipe and when I saw that it was really quite simple to prepare, this was something I can do which I think I will have a good chance of success. And I was right! I was able to really create a good, healthy and tasty banana bread that my family really liked. I am glad to have found this site online for this recipe for a banana bread as it gave me something good to start with.
