How to Easily Cook Brown Rice
I have several New Year resolutions and one of them is to try to eat healthier. One of the hardest things has been to switch from white bread and white rice to wheat bread and brown rice. I am finally starting to enjoy the taste of both wheat toast and brown rice, but learning how to cook brown rice has been more of a challenge.
It turns out that the easiest way to cook brown rice is simply add an extra 1/2 cup of water to the pan and cook for an additional 5-8 minutes.
Brown rice is also a good substitute in one of my favorite dishes, this dirty rice recipe, too. Over the years, I have slowly been making this recipe healthier, a little at a time. Dirty rice is prepared with vegetables and chicken livers, which give it its brown color and hence the name “dirty.”
Luckily, brown rice maintains the brown color of the dish while allowing me to phase out the less-than-optimal chicken livers.
